Infection Prevention & Control

The Infection Prevention and Control (IP&C) team is committed to keeping patients/residents/clients and staff safe by preventing and controlling the spread of infections between patients/residents/clients (P/R/C), staff and visitors. This is a key issue that impacts outcomes (including health and safety) and resource utilization.  IP&C’s overall goal is to prevent the spread of infections in health-care settings. Foundational components of the IP&C program include:

  • IP&C education for staff, patients/residents/clients, and visitors
  • Working collaboratively with and providing expert advice to other programs and services
  • Developing evidence-based policies and procedures
  • Surveillance of infections, early detection and investigation, investigation of potential outbreaks, and managing outbreaks
  • Providing leadership and oversight to auditing programs (e.g., hand hygiene, personal protective equipment, etc.)
  • Educating health professionals on infection prevention protocols to facilitate emergency preparedness
  • Supporting evidence based practice (research, both critical review and publish)
  • Providing leadership and expertise in Infection Prevention and Control practices

Infection Prevention and Control is a shared responsibility for all staff, patients/residents/clients, and visitors.  To find out how you can help prevent the spread of infections, please refer to the provincial resources provided in the IP&C Resource Finder.
