Implicit Bias in Healthcare

Dr. Clara Cheng received her PhD in social psychology from The Ohio State University with minors in quantitative psychology and cognitive psychology. Her specialization is in the area of social cognition, which examines how people understand and perceive their social world, particularly in ways outside of one’s conscious awareness or control. Her work includes co-developing an implicit bias measure that has been cited over a thousand times in the literature. Currently, Dr. Cheng is a professor and chair of the Department of Psychology, Counseling, and Criminology at Carlow University where she teaches courses in social psychology and statistics.
Through a discussion of the facts and myths about implicit biases that occur in integrated healthcare, participants will be provided with information about:
- how biases are formed.
- the research on implicit biases, with a particular focus on the effect of implicit bias in interdisciplinary healthcare settings.
- the effectiveness of interventions designed to mitigate implicit bias
