QI Power Hour: Administrative Burden, Integrating Human Factors and the BC Health Quality Matrix for Improvement

Health Quality BC with the Ministry of Health and Doctors of BC are focused on the identification of physician administrative burden, including duplicative or overly complex paperwork, documentation or tasks that impact a patient’s timely access to quality care, and safety. Grounding this work in the BC Health Quality Matrix, HQBC have been relentless in the pursuit of reduction of physician administrative burden, while prioritizing collaborative relationships, advocacy, and increased quality of care.
A social science and person-centered approach was used to bring multiple groups together while integrating human factors principles to understand workflows, tasks, current environmental and operational challenges to identify and reduce administrative burden. Early findings have found a reduction of 183,335 unnecessary physician hours, with an additional 9,646 physician hours reduced from no-show and cancelled appointments.
