Embracing Discomfort

Description

For an organisation to maintain an inclusive environment, every individual has to embrace something we’ve traditionally been taught to avoid at all costs: discomfort. Capitalism and archaic social norms have taught us to value conformity, and to encourage polite, non-confrontational, and traditional behaviour. While this behaviour makes sense given the professionalism the corporate world calls for, it encourages systemic discrimination to go unquestioned and the oppressors to claim zero accountability.

While questioning patterns of discrimination, racism, and stereotyping behaviours may feel seriously uncomfortable, it is important to remember the adage, “You can’t make an omelette without breaking a few eggs.” So let’s toss some eggs, shall we?

Learning Objectives

Following this workshop, participants will be able to:
● Identify assumptions, stereotypes, and microaggressions directed at members of underrepresented populations
● Take charge in guiding their teams through potential discomfort, friction, and difficult conversations
● Navigate these conversations, allow for learning opportunities, and ensure that the behaviour is not repeated
● Provide adequate support, feedback, and encourage others to embrace discomfort and engage in important conversation
