Edge of Science and Medicine Speaker Series – The Neurobiology of Grief

Dr. Mary-Frances O’Connor will be presenting as the Department of Clinical Health Psychology’s speaker for the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences Edge of Science and Medicine Speaker Series.

Learning objectives:

1. Describe how the neurobiological attachment system encodes relationship bonds in humans and pair-bonded animals, using neurochemicals like oxytocin, dopamine, and endogenous opioids.

2. Define prolonged grief disorder (PGD) and describe psychological and neuroscientific data that identify PGD.

3. Explain how rumination and avoidance can prolong the process of updating the prediction (i.e., learning) that the deceased is no longer available.
