What is an AI scribe tool?

AI scribe tools are specialized applications that use artificial intelligence (AI) and natural language processing to automate the documentation of patient interactions in healthcare. They transcribe and summarize conversations between clinicians and patients, creating structured medical notes in real-time, which can help reduce the administrative burden on healthcare professionals.

Providers should understand considerations, responsibilities and obligations associated with using AI scribe tools and follow licensing body guidelines and regulations on use.

Canada Health Infoway’s AI Scribe Program (initiated June 2025)

Canada Health Infoway is an independent, federally funded, not-for-profit organization tasked with accelerating the adoption of digital health solutions, such as electronic health records, across Canada.

The AI Scribe Program is a national initiative being led by Canada Health Infoway in collaboration with provincial and territorial partners to help reduce the documentation burden on primary care clinicians. The program funds up to 10,000 one-year AI Scribe licenses for eligible primary care clinicians across Canada. Manitoba is participating and was allocated 550 licenses for eligible primary care providers, including Family Physicians, Nurse Practitioners, Registered Nurses working in remote communities, and Pediatricians providing longitudinal care in the community.

In Manitoba, participants fall into two streams, those working in independently-owned electronic medical records (EMRs) and those working in regionally-supported EMRs.

Those on an independently-owned EMR were able to select any of the pre-qualified AI scribe tools.  Those working on a regionally-supported EMR are using a specific tool from a single vendor to ensure compatibility with the provincial EMR system.
