Shared Health Health Providers logo

The Department of Surgery is a dynamic, expanding, and diverse academic department within the University of Manitoba. As part of Manitoba’s provincial health authority, Shared Health, we are integrated into a province‑wide network responsible for planning, coordinating, and supporting specialized health services across Manitoba. This connection ensures that our surgical programs benefit from unified clinical planning, consistent standards of care, and collaborative expertise from across the health system.

Shared Health’s province‑wide approach helps us deliver high‑quality, reliable surgical care to patients in communities throughout Manitoba—urban, rural, and northern—by centralizing specialized resources where appropriate and supporting seamless access across regions.

Our department is committed to clinical excellence, innovation, outstanding patient care, and leading‑edge research. With a team of dedicated surgeons, clinicians, researchers, and educators, we provide specialized expertise across a wide range of surgical disciplines. Together, we work to advance surgical practice, train the next generation of health‑care professionals, and improve health outcomes for all Manitobans.

Accessing Surgical Care

Patients are referred to surgical services by their primary care provider or another healthcare professional when a surgical consultation is needed. Referrals are reviewed by the appropriate surgical team and prioritized based on clinical urgency. Once received, patients will be contacted with information about their consultation or next steps in their care.
